Human trafficking workshop
IMPHAL, Jun 20 : A three-day long district level training programme on human trafficking for Imphal West District Police personnel has begun from today at the headquarters of the district quarters. In all 25 police personnel belonging to different rankings, ranging from ASI to DSP, are participating in the training programme. Participating in the workshop as a resource person, chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur district L Pishak Singh pointed out that after drugs, human trafficking has become the second largest crime in the world today in terms of financial volume. It is a lucrative business involving a series of criminal activities including kid- napping, harassment, etc. However, there is no proper documentation on human trafficking cases in Manipur. Although the crime of human trafficking in Manipur may have come to the surface since 2006, it has been in existence decades ago. But most of the time, the crime has been recorded in the section of abduction, missing or sexual harassment. Such loopholes gave full advantage to the perpetrators to remain scot-free and beyond the reach of the law, Pishak explained. He also stressed on the need for co-operation between the law enforcement and the civil society to stop human trafficking. The training programme began with the welcome address delivered by Additional SP (Law & Order), Imphal West district N Herojit Meetei and the inaugural address by DIG ( HQ/Administration Clay Khongsai.
