Cops bust bride trafficking ring

Unearthing a racket for supplying “bride slaves” from other states to men in Haryana, the Delhi police on Tuesday arrested five persons and rescued four trafficked girls. The racket was smashed after the police acted on an input of a 24-year-old woman who was trafficked from West Bengal and sold for `80,000 to a man in Haryana’s Rewari district for a forced marriage.
Hinting that there would be a prevalence of such cases in Haryana, which the police is trying to probe, joint commissioner of police (crime branch) Ravindra Yadav, said: “Haryana has the worst sex ratio among all states as according to 2011 census the number of women in the state stands 879 much below the national average of 943,” adding, “Such circumstances have led to difficulties in finding matrimonial matches for the landless and unskilled men, which has led them to indulge in illegally procuring poor girls from other lesser developed states for forced marriages.”
“We received an input that a 24-year-old woman and her cousin, 17, were drugged and trafficked to Delhi to be further sold for marriages at different places in Haryana. The woman, who was found to be a resident of North Dinajpur in West Bengal, was examined in the presence of an NGO, and she disclosed that she and her cousin were drugged at Raiganj railway station in West Bengal when they had gone to buy medicines for her mother,” said the police.
“Two unknown men and one woman, after befriending them, gave them food laced with sedatives after which they were brought to Delhi where the 24-year-old was sold to a man in village Bhadawas in Rewari as a bride slave.” However, she somehow managed to escape from the house and approached an NGO.
A mediator, Ram Bhavan, who helped the deal was arrested. At his instance, Ashok (35), who had solemnised a forced marriage with the woman on June 19, was nabbed.
From their interrogation, it was revealed that Saiyed Ali, alias Raju (29), Wasabi Barman (35) and Suraj, alias Bisavjeet, all residents North Dinajpur, were the ones who had drugged both the victims and brought them to Delhi. “Both of them were first taken to Ram Bhavan’s house where the deals were finalised. Bhavan’s wife Laxmi managed the girls in the house,” said the cops, adding, “Later, in this case, with the help one Rita, who has also been arrested, the girls were sold.”
At Rita’s instance, the kingpin of the racket, Saiyed Ali, and his deputy Wasabi Barman were arrested from Nangloi Metro station, when they were trying to flee.
“All the arrested accused were interrogated together and on August 11, the victim’s cousin was rescued as well from Village Bupania of Jhajjar district in Haryana. She had been sold to one Pramod for the same purpose on June 21.”
Two more girls were rescued from Sampla and Makdoli villages in Haryana and they too had been sold by the kingpin, Saiyed Ali, over the past few months.

Traffickers sell woman for 10 lakh; three arrested in Ahmedabad

Following a rap by Gujarat high court (HC) directing police to act in an alleged case of human trafficking, women cell of the city crime branch on Friday night arrested three including two women for allegedly selling off a 25-year-old woman in marriage to a Himmatnagar-based youth for Rs 10 lakhs.

Police have arrested Meena Mishra running a dance class in Isanpur area of Ahmedabad, her friend Rita Bangali and Ishwar Malhotra.

"There are 10 other accused in the case including Sanjay Patel, a 35-year old bachelor, to whom the woman was sold and forcibly married after money allegedly exchanged hands. Sanjay's uncle Dr Dixit Patel had allegedly given the girl medicine for abortion. He is also an accused," said assistant commissioner of police, women cell, Kanan Desai.

The victim has also alleged that she was confined and raped for one month by Sanjay. The woman belonged to the minority community and had changed her religion after she fell for a Hindu boy. She was also living with the boy's sister in Isanpur. In fact, she is reported to have continued living with her even after the boy broke up with her.

"The complainant has alleged that the boy's sister was in touch with Meena for the past few years. Meena was contacted by agents Vijay and Gunjesh to find a girl for Sanjay who was not being able to find a bride in his community. They promised handsome remuneration. This is a social manifestation of skewed sex ratio in Gujarat where many men are unable to find brides in their own community," said a police official. Meena convinced the boy's sister and lured her to send the victim with her for marriage.

The girl has alleged that she was sold off to Sanjay who married her forcibly. "The victim has alleged that she was then confined and raped for one month. Later, when she became pregnant Sanjay's uncle Dr Patel gave her abortion tablets," said the official.

The victim later escaped from the custody of her tormentors and approached a lawyer who took her to different police agencies. "However, as no action was taken we were compelled to knock the doors of Gujarat high court which directed women cell to file an FIR," said advocate Zahid Pathan.

3 held for trafficking, 3 girls rescued

With the arrest of three persons, two of whom are natives of West Bengal, the Chandigarh Police have busted a gang involved in human trafficking and have recovered three girls, including two minors.
Those arrested have been identified as Gopal Sarkar and Daddu Mondi, both residents of Naya Gram in Burdwan district of West Bengal, and Raju, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26.
Inspector Jasbir Singh, SHO, Mani Majra, said they had a tip-off that the suspects were looking for some customer to sell a minor. “We posed as decoy customers and negotiated with the suspects, who asked us to come to Kishangarh,” the SHO said. He said the suspects were arrested while taking an advance of Rs 5,000 and the minor girl was recovered from them at the spot. The police said during investigation, they recovered another minor girl from them.
Another girl, who is over 18 years of age and was allegedly sold a few months ago to a Mani Majra resident for Rs 70,000, was also recovered by the police.  
All accused were produced in the court today, which sent them to three-day police remand.

‘Sold’ to Haryana man, Assam teen rescued

to whom the girl was ‘sold’ claimed to have married the victim and addressed her as his wife. However, the girl denied the marriage, said the police.
A teenage girl from Assam’s Dhubri district, who was allegedly sold to a man in Haryana’s Fatehabad, was rescued by the police last week, five months after she left home for a job promised to her by the alleged trafficker.
The girl’s mother, who travelled all the way to Fatehabad to look for her daughter, informed local police about the incident. In her complaint, the girl’s mother alleged that one Akram, a resident of Guwahati, took the girl away under the pretext of getting her a job in Haryana.
“Her mother tried to get in touch with Akram on the phone number he had given her before leaving Assam with the girl. She was then brought to Fatehabad by the accused himself,” said Bimla Devi, SHO, Sadar Fatehabad.
The accused Akram had sold the girl to a middle-aged man in Fatehabad, said police. “Akram and his partner Hawa Singh sold the girl for Rs 80, 000 to 35-year-old Bhagwan Das, a resident of Jhandwala village, to be his wife,” said the SHO. “When our team reached Das’s residence, he claimed to have married the victim and addressed her as his wife. However, the girl denied the marriage,” said Bimla Devi.
Police believe that the trio was planning to sell off the girl again.

Gang sold women from Mumbai to bride-starved village in Gujarat

Within a month of catching wind of a human trafficking racket covering Maharashtra and Gujarat, the Mumbai police have arrested all seven accused; they would sell women and minor girls from the city to a village near Ahmedabad, which has a female population of only 10 per cent


Last month, a 22-year-old rape survivor fled home to Mumbai from Gujarat and exposed an inter-state human trafficking racket involving the supply of women and young girls from the city and its outskirts to be sold as brides in a village near Ahmedabad, which has a very skewed sex ratio. 

Taking swift action, the Pydhonie police had immediately conducted a raid and rescued two minor girls from a similar fate, and now, less than a month later, the cops have busted the entire racket with the arrest of the last absconding accused.
Beginnings On April 17, a 22-year-old girl approached the Pydhonie police and told them that she had been tricked into going to Bakrana, a village near Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where she was forced to marry a 45-year-old villager.
She alleged that she had been sold to the man for Rs 1 lakh and he had raped her and kept her confined until she managed to finally escape. She gave the police details about the racket and the accused, with the help of which the cops immediately raided the village and rescued two minor girls who had been similarly abducted.
Upon investigation, the cops found that the racket was being run by a group of seven, who would lure girls and women to the village under the pretext of getting them a job or finding a marital match for them. Once the girls arrived in Bakrana, however, they were sold as wives to the local men.
“In Bakrana, women form only 10% of the population. Because of this shortage of girls, most men remain unmarried there. Having a bride is a status symbol there, and married men are seen as rich and powerful,” said Senior Inspector Sunil Kavlekar of Pydhonie police station.

Modus operandi

Amongst the accused were Kalyan-resident Meera Salve, her husband Dilip and son Trishant. The trio would supply women and girls from Mumbai and its outskirts, promising them jobs or rich husbands. “The couple first zeroed in on poor families and then began to offer clothes and food to them. Once the family began to trust them, they would put forth a proposal of marriage or a job for the girls. Once the parents agreed, the accused would pay them Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000,” said a cop.
Once the deal was struck, the family would call two other accused — Rajendra Waghela and Vajubhai Dogaria, who run marriage bureaus in Ahmedabad and Surat respectively. They would, in turn, contact two agents, Ganpat Patel and Lakhan Pawar, who would search for men willing to pay for brides.
The girls were sold for anywhere between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, depending on the purchasing power of the groom.
Arrests, rescues The first to be arrested was the prime accused, Meera, who initially fled to Dhulia in north Maharashtra but was eventually chased down by the police. With the help of the 22-year-old who had escaped, they also arrested the agent, Ganpat, who confessed and provided information that helped the cops raid Bakrana village and rescue the two minors.
Following this, the rest of the accused were apprehended as well, with the most recent arrest taking place last week.
The rescue operation, however, was challenging in itself, as the locals refused to cooperate. “Our officers were stuck for a day in the village as the locals were not allowing us to enter and rescue the girls. We had to call for additional officers and rescue the girls, who had already been pushed into marriages,” said SPI Kavlekar, adding that the force was now searching for six other girls who had been similarly abducted and sold.

Charges

Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang had been operating since the last three years, and had sold more than six girls from Mumbai. Police have booked the accused on charges of rape (IPC 376), kidnapping (IPC 363), wrongful confinement for three or more days (IPC 343) and criminal intimidation (IPC 120 b).

Two missing teenage girls rescued from Jammu

Two teenage girls who went missing last week from Singdan-Warson village of Kupwara district were rescued from Jammu today on 21st of April. 
The two girls, both 15 years of age, went missing from their village in north Kashmir on April 14 when they left for the nearby market to buy some food items 
After receiving the missing complaint, the police launched a massive search operation during which it was surfaced that the girls have been kidnapped. Subsequently, a case was registered and an investigating team raided many places to trace them, police said.
Upon getting information that the girls were in Jammu, a police team was immediately sent to the winter capital of the state, following which they were rescued
A woman, identified as Shaheena, a resident of Hatmulla village of Kupwara district, has been arrested, Further investigation was on, and more arrests are expected.

Two minor girls rescued one arrested from Gujarat

In a case of abduction and sale of girls for forced marriage, a 26-year-old Gujarat resident was arrested by the Mumbai police for buying and raping a 22-year-old  woman. The police also rescued two 17-year-old girls. 

Two minor girls from Mumbai, who had been taken to Gujarat and forcibly married, have been rescued by police from Ahmedabad. 

Following a complaint lodged by another girl, who had also been taken to Gujarat along with the two minor girls, Mumbai police nabbed one accused within 24 hours on April 16. 

"A woman, identified as Meera Salve, had promised to provide a job to the three girls. The girls, residents of Wadi Bundar of south Mumbai, were then taken to Gujarat. However, once they reached, the girls were forced into marriage," 

one of the victims managed to escape from the clutches of the accused and reached Mumbai. She then approached us and filed a complaint on April 15,

Mumbai police took help of the local police and inquired those against whom the victim had lodged a complaint. police rescued two minors girls and arrested one accused. However, another accused (husband of one of the girls) managed to flee

As per the information, the prime accused in the case Meera Salve, a resident of Kalyan, has fled to Dhulia in north Maharashtra. 

An FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the IPC, police said.

tribal girl sold by brother rescued, 8 detained

RANCHI/RAMGARH: A 20-year-old tribal girl, who was allegedly sold by her brother for Rs 10,000, was rescued from Ramgarh railway station late on Friday. Eight persons were detained for questioning, police said on Saturday.

The incident came to light after a railway police constable saw the girl, a resident of Sikidiri village in Ranchi district, being forced to board a train at Ramgarh station. The girl told the constable that she was forced to marry a 32-year-old deaf and mute man, Dhonu Yadav, from Allahabad. The groom and his three relatives and three others, including trafficker Neval Mahato alias Nevlal, were detained immediately. Her brother, Prem Bedia, too, was taken for interrogation.

Mithilesh Ram, officer in charge of GRP Ramgarh, said, "The girl said she did not want to marry the man but was forced to. She said her brother got Rs 10,000 from the trafficker (Mahato)." The GRP handed over the seven men to Sikidiri police on Saturday. However, no FIR has been lodged yet. OC of Sikidiri police station Laxman Singh said, "We are interrogating them. Once we understand the matter, we will consult higher officials and take further action."

Omani national held in Hyderabad for marrying minor girl

A 70-year-old Omani national was arrested here for undertaking a contract marriage with a minor girl, police said on Monday. Police rescued the 17-year-old girl and also arrested the qazi who performed the marriage, a travel agent, a broker and two mediators.

Police have also invoked the ‘Nirbhaya’ Act besides Prohibition of Child Marriage Act against the Omani national. Deputy Commissioner of Police (south zone) V. Satyanarayana said a case was booked at Kanchanbagh police station in the old city.

The Omani national has been identified as Senaidi Khamis Mohammed Khamis, who entered into a contract marriage with the minor girl at the office-cum-residence of the travel agent in Barkas. The travel agent, marriage broker and two mediators had convinced the girl’s mother, a widow, to perform the marriage saying this will solve their financial problems. They, however, concealed the fact that the Omani national was marrying the girl for couple of weeks for Rs.1 lakh.

Police rescued the victim after she informed one of her cousins that she was being married to a foreign national against her wish. Police said qazi Syed Zulfeqar Ali was arrested for performing the illegal marriage. It said despite warnings, some qazis were performing contract marriages by bending Shariat rules for monetary gains.

In 2004, the Wakf Board had noticed the exploitation of poor Muslim girls and had directed qazis not to straightway perform marriages involving foreign nationals especially those from the Gulf countries. The qazis were asked to alert the Wakf Board when they are approached to perform such marriages.

“contract marriages” are illegal in India and forbidden in Islam, they are increasing in Hyderabad, in southern India, where wealthy foreigners, local agents and ‘Qazis’ – government-appointed Muslim priests – are exploiting poverty among the city’s Muslim families.

Kutch district of Gujarat is new destination for the Bride trafficking

In 2012, Rachna Awasthi was trafficked to Kutch from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh by Nayan Boochiya for Rs 50,000. The 18-year-old was married off to Nayan's son Hiren, a farmer in Khokhra village. Even while she was struggling to cope with the new culture, she conceived a son in 2013. A week later, she was sold off to another man for Rs 80,000.

If you thought women were trafficked in Kutch only from West Bengal and areas bordering Indo-Bangladesh border, think again. Like Rachna, other girls from UP, Assam, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are living as forced brides in the western Gujarat district.

Agents are making a fortune flogging brides for Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending on their age and skin texture. Once they bear kids, most of them are disposed of or offered for sale at a higher price.

According to 2011 census, there are 921 girls per 1,000 boys in Kutch. In rural areas, there are 926 girls, while 910 in urban areas. Even if a rural groom has enough land, he is unable to get a bride. Reason: Girls don't want to settle in villages. Sata, an age-old tradition, has also gained momentum as several men are being forced to stay single. In Sata, a boy can't marry if he doesn't have a sister to barter. But now, men from affluent families are exploring new options where impoverished families are readily relinquishing their daughters.

Hansa Rathore of Ekal Nari Shakti Manch (ENSM) claimed of 50 cases where girls were trafficked from UP, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and were spurned after they bore kids. "More than 20 girls have been trafficked from TN alone in Khokhra village of Anjar block," Rathod said. Girl escaped from bride trafficking


Rumali (Right, blurred face) student of 10th in Guwahati was cheated by her boyfriend Rahul native of Naogaon of Assam. She left her home and came to Delhi with her boyfriend where he tried to sell her as Bride somewhere in Faridabad of Haryana. she managed to escape and stayed in a jungle near ballabgarh for two days after that an Auto-driver saw her unconscious who called our Haryana office. Our Brave Activist Sanjida (BT survivor and community leader) and her husband promised to reach there and requested him to help her in reaching local police station. The Police registred a case and Girl is now staying in Sanjida's communue. Sanjida and other Community leaders are helping her to overcome from truama.

The girl's family have been informed and hope they will reach here by 20th of this month.

This is a growing trend in Assam, a number of girls are being lured and sold by their boyfriends. however I'm worried that this kind of examples can be used against the love-relationships in our patriarchal society.

Bride Trafficking : Woman gang raped and sold, 2 year old son brutally murdered

A 27-year-old woman from Maharashtra was gang raped and her son brutally murdered by three men in Haryana's Rewari district on Thursday.
The woman's ordeal did not end there as she was later sold off to a man for 40,000 at Alwar in neighbouring Rajasthan.
"The woman was spotted with her two-year-old child at the Rewari railway station on December 9 by a truck driver, Mukesh Kumar. The truck driver lured her by promising to marry her and take them to Khajuri village in the Bawal industrial zone," SP of Rewari, Nazneen Bhasin said.
Kumar then handed over the woman and her child under the custody of his friend Satish Kumar before leaving with his truck. Satish, however, had other plans. Satish sent his family to Rewari on December 11 before he called his friends Hawa Singh and Jaipal Singh to his Khajuri residence. The trio gang raped the woman in an inebriated state in the evening.
More horror was to follow when one of the three men smashed the child to death, fearing his cries would alert the villagers staying near the house. Later, the trio had stuffed the child's body inside a bag to dispose it at a deserted spot.
While Jaipal stayed back at Khajuri village, Satish and Hawa Singh forcibly took the woman to Alwar the next day, where they sold her to a local, identified as Sandeep Kumar, for 40,000. A middleman, Suraj Bhan, helped Satish and Hawa Singh strike the deal with Sandeep.
"We were alerted about the incident by the Khajuri sarpanch. The village chief had become suspicious as Satish went missing without any word. By that time, Satish Kumar and Hawa Singh had taken the victim to Alwar district. Jaipal Singh's arrest at Khajuri village led to the arrest of Sandeep Kumar, Hawa Singh, Satish Kumar and Suraj Bhan from Nangli village on Saturday," the Superintendent of Police said.
The police rescued the victim from the house of Sandeep Kumar in Nangli village while the child's body was recovered from Satish's house in Khajuri village. Jaipal was unable to dispose off the body as he was left alone by his accomplices.
A manhunt has been launched to the sixth accused, Mukesh Kumar, who had handed over the victim and her son to Satish.
The Rewari Police has booked Satish Kumar, Hawa Singh and Jaipal Singh for gang rape and murder while Mukesh Kumar, Suraj Bhan and Sandeep Kumar were booked under the IPC sections relating to kidnapping and human trade at the Bawal police station.

Minor girl attempts suicide after being held by traffickers

A minor girl who was allegedly sold by human traffickers attempted suicide by consuming some poisonous substance after she was not allowed to go back to her mother by those who had purchased her.
The matter was exposed after the minor was admitted to the district hospital after her condition deteriorated yesterday, Additional Superintendent of Police(ASP) Rajesh Dandotiya said here today.
The minor girl was allegedly sold by a woman along with her associates to a man identified as Rajendra Singh Solanki, he said.
She was sold by Suman Bai and one Amravati-based Sanjay through one Umraosingh and Udaysingh to Solanki who was unmarried and wanted to get "married" for Rs 37,000 on August 15 at Mortakka in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh.
Solanki then "married" the girl allegedly against her wishes who insisted that she wanted to go back to her mother.
When Solanki did not allow her to go back, she consumed some poisonous substance after which she was brought to the Khandwa district hospital in a serious condition.
In her statement to tehsildar Ashish Khare, she narrated her ordeal, after which her so called "husband" Solanki was arrested by the police.
The minor said she was brought by Suman Bai to Akola from Amravati's Pati village where they met Sanjay, after which both of them took her to Laundhi village.
They forcibly "married" her and did not allow her to return to her mother after which she took the extreme step, she said in her statement.
A police team was dispatched to Amravati to trace others involved in the human trafficking racket.
A case was registered under Section 376, 370, 370 (a) and other relevant sections of theIndian Penal Code in this regard, the ASP said.

Tribal girl sold for 30,000, rescued after scuffle

SURAT: A 16-year-old tribal girl, who was allegedly sold for Rs 30,000 by her parents, has been rescued in Ahwa town of Dang district.

Two months ago, the girl's parents had sold her to a 21-year-old youth, Ashwin Charola, from Kherva village of Surendranagar district. Last week, she had come to see her parents in her native Bhabkal village.

Two days ago, Charola and his two relatives came to take her back. However, she resisted their attempt. Shockingly, her parents also forced her out of the house and she was taken to the Ahwa bus station to board the bus for Surendranagar. Ugly scenes were witnessed at the bus stand as the girl continued to fight and resist going back.

Meanwhile, police got information about the scuffle and reached the spot. The girl narrated her trauma to police and started begging for protection.

"The girl is not married to the youth. She was sold by her parent for Rs 30,000. As she is a minor, we have booked Charola for rape," said RC Vasava, Saputara sub-inspector.

Police also arrested her father Laxman Bhowar and Charola's two relatives under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. Her mother Hiraben is absconding.

The skewed sex ratio is forcing youth from Saurashtra to seek girls from tribal areas. Surendranagar has a child (0 to 6 years) sex ratio of 896 per 1,000 boys, while there are 930 women per 1000 men as per 2011 census.

Police said that at least 25 girls from Bhabkal village alone have been married in different villages of Saurashtra.

Sources said the accused youth is from Chuvaliya Koli community and works as farm labourer. His relative Rajesh had also married a tribal girl in the same village a year ago. Rajesh's parents had found this girl for Ashwin.

Due to skewed sex ratio, it is difficult for the Saurashtrian youth to find girl from their own community. However, the grooms look for tribal girls, whose parents let them go for few thousands of rupees.

"There are about six youths in Kherva village married to tribal girls from Dang. There are other villages in the taluka where you will find tribal girls married to the Saurashtrian youth," said a villager.

Girl from Bengal sold for Rs. 40k rescued in Hathras

A 17-year-old girl who had gone missing from Dumaria village in West Bengal on August 5 was rescued in Hathras after the arrest of two kidnappers here on Tuesday.
A gang in West Bengal had sold her to a man, Sanju Singh, 28 in Hathras for Rs. 40,000. He had married her forcibly. Police said this gang was active in selling girls on the pretext of getting them married.
Acting on the FIR of kidnapping lodged by the victim’s mother, the Bengal police raided many places in the city on Tuesday and arrested the two accused. However, Sanju was absconding.
The girl’s family members tried to trace her but failed. After some time, they received a phone call from the victim who told them about the problem she was in.
After the victim’s mother lodged an FIR against unknown persons in Harischandra police station (W Bengal) on August 27 stating that her daughter had been kidnapped and sold, the police arrested a woman, Sundari and a man, Jamir on August 31 and took them on remand.
Sub-inspector Kajal Chatterji of Harishchandra police station came to Hathras along with two women constables. After searching for the missing girl for four days, they contacted the Kotwali Sadar police and began the search operation.
Police said the victim was living with Sanju Singh of Surangpura area. Though cops found the girl, Sanju managed to flee. He is working in a local jam factory.
The victim told police that her uncle Umesh had brought her to Harishchandra railway station on August 5 and sent her with a youth Lalchand. One woman was also with him at that time. Lalchand then sold her to Sanju in Hathras for Rs. 40,000.
The victim alleged that Sanju used to lock her while going for work. One day, she found an opportunity and informed her family members through the cell phone.

Bride trafficking a rising concern in U’khand

DEHRADUN: As against the skewed sex ratio of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pardesh, eight out of the total 13 district of Uttarakhand has more women than men. But their dainty physical appearance, fair complexion and poor background has made them vulnerable to traffickers, now on the prowl in the hill state more than ever before. The revenue officers who handle additional charge of policing in these hill districts are generally ill-equipped and poorly trained to tackle agents indulging in this sordid business. "Fifty per cent of those who are married off outside the hills become victim of deception. Of these, 40% are actually sold off into prostitution in the garb of marriage while 10% end up in in-congruent marriages, where, for instance, the husband is old in age," Preeti Jain, coordinator of Ashram Trust, said. "With the anti-human trafficking cell (AHTC) becoming active in the state, the regular police has begun tracking such cases with help from the revenue police. Until June this year, 88 such cases have been reported from across the state. It was 138 last year," said DIG Satish Shukla. "Poverty is the biggest factor behind women being trafficked," said Mamta Bohra, head of AHTC. 

"In Dehradun, Vikasnagar has become a hub for women trafficking." Vimmi Sachdeva, SSP Naintal, added, "It was on July 23 that we rescued a 12-year-old girl who was raped and sold off multiple times by her maternal uncle. She had also given birth to a son at such a young age. Around 13 similar cases have been reported in Nainital district this year. A woman is normally sold off for Rs 40-50,000, out of which Rs 20,000 is earned by the agent himself." Surender Bhandari, coordinator of NGO Janank Smiti said that 27 vulnerable, poor girls were sold off from Vikasnagar in the name of marriage last year. According to sources, in a meeting called by DM Nainital on this matter, it was found that 60 girls from nearby villages were sold in just one year. Seventeen girls of Okhal Kanda Block in Naintal district who had married two years ago were never seen again. Geeta Gairola, project director of Mahila Smakhya organization, said, "Our teams have raided these agents from Uttarkashi, Chamoli and other hill districts many times. But they escaped under the pretext of fake marriage. These people also carry bridal clothes and 'sehra' in their vehicles. The girls mostly cross the boundary of the hills for the first time and have no idea where they are being taken." Suresh Bhai, environmentalist and social worker, said the cases related to women trafficking never reach SWC. Hence help of local NGOs and villagers should be taken to identify the agents to break their nexus. Former chairperson of SWC, Sushila Baluni, confessed that she got no such complaints during her term which ended two years ago. After that no one was appointed in her place.

16-year-old girl sold off for Rs 90,000, four booked in Gujarat

A 16-year-old tribal girl from Songadh in south Gujarat was allegedly sold off to a farmer in Kheda for Rs 90,000 by a gang that promised her a job. A case was registered with the Surat Crime Branch after the girl escaped from Kheda after being “married” to the farmer.
The girl, a resident of Songadh taluka in Tapi district, was travelling to Surat in a state transport bus four months ago. A co-passenger, who identified herself as Meena alias Bhuri Thakor, a resident of Bajwa in Vadodara, got friendly with the girl. Later, both exchanged their mobile numbers as the girl reportedly told Meena that she was looking for a job.
Few days later, Meena called her up saying that she found a suitable job for her and asked the girl to come to Vadodara. Meena and her friend Madhu Patel met her in Vadodara railway station and took her to the house of one Rai Singh in Saraspur village of Vadodara.
According to the complaint, Meena locked her in a room of that house for few days. Later, a farmer from Vatva village in Kheda district, identified as Kirit Bhoye, allegedly bought the girl paying Rs 90,000 to Meena and took her with him saying he would marry her. When she refused to marry him, Kriti locked her in a room and threatened to kill her. He also allegedly raped her for two months, the police said.
However, the parents of the girl didn’t lodge any “missing” complaint as she had told them that she got a job in Vadodara. After getting an opportunity, the girl escaped from Kirit’s house a week ago and returned to her native place. She told her parents the story and she along with her parents lodged a complaint against the four accused at the Surat city Crime Branch police station on Saturday. Later in the afternoon, the police took the girl to the New Civil Hospital for medical examination.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Antrip Sood said, “We have registered a case and have started investigations. The victim had gone to Vadodara to get job, but the gang sold her off to a person and earned money. We have launched a search operation of the accused persons and they will be arrested soon.” (Report)

Ajmer: Grandfather marries off minor for Rs. 2 lakh

A 15-year-old girl forcibly married off by her grandfather to a 55-year-old man has sought the help of a Rajasthan-based NGO to get her out of the illegal union.The minor and her parents, who were against the marriage, fled their home in Ajmer district after a caste panchayat asked them to accept it or pay Rs. 10 lakh to the groom. They were forced to go into hiding for 18 months. The matter came to light after the NGO, Saarthi, held a press conference in Jodhpur on Friday.“My grandfather Lal forcefully married me off to Jaisalmer resident Ram on February 17, 2012,” the girl said at the press meet.She said her grandfather had taken Rs. 2 lakh from the groom’s family.The girl said when her father protested, Lal and some other relatives locked him in a room and continued with the marriage rituals.The girl’s father later approached a local police station. He claimed the police refused to register an FIR.He left home with his daughter and wife, but received repeated threat calls from a caste panchayat member.Kriti Bharti, managing trustee of Saarthi, said the NGO had approached Lal and Ram to end the illegal marriage. “If they don’t respond by Saturday, we will file a petition under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act before a court.”In India, the legal marriageable age for girls and boys is 18 and 21.The girl's plight again brings to the fore one of toughest social battles India faces.According to UN statistics, India has the largest number of child brides in the world, with 47% girls married off below the age of 18.An International Centre for Research on Women study conducted for the Unicef in 2010 revealed that in high-prevalence states such as Bihar and Rajasthan, more than 60% of girls were married off before they turned 18.

Trafficked, sold twice in Rajasthan

GUWAHATI: It took almost three painful months for Fatema (name changed), who is in her Twenties, to free herself from the clutches of a trafficking racket in Rajasthan. Trapped in August, she returned to her family in the Basistha area here a few days ago, after Guwahati Police arrested a gang of traffickers from Rajasthan.
"My husband took me to Rajasthan saying that we will be looking for jobs there. Then, he told me that one Jahidul Ali will provide some job and asked me to visit him. After that my husband fled and I came to know that I was sold for Rs 60, 000. Jahidul sold me to one Mohar Singh who again sold me to one Raju Singh for Rs 70, 000. However, I managed to escape and alerted police and my brother in Guwahati," said a teary-eyed Fatema. She was beaten, tortured and molested during this period.
City Police took help from their counterparts in Rajasthan and arrested her husband, Jahidul, Mohar and Raju on Thursday. Police said several gangs from Kota, Mewat, Gogamari and Alwar in Rajasthan are active in the region.
"The men have revealed that girls from Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam are on sale for anything between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000 in Rajasthan. Most of them are sold for forced marriages, bonded labour and sex trade," said a policeman here.
However, not everyone is as lucky as Fatema. Figures available with the state police revealed that about 2,740 women have been kidnapped in Assam between January and September this year, with the monthly figure being about 304. According to a report of the National Crime Records Bureau, at least 3,360 cases of kidnapping of women were recorded in Assam in 2012.

Girl kidnapped, sold to father of four in Kashmir




RAJOURI, Sep 15: A girl from Mora Daraj, a remote village under Kotranka Police Station in Rajouri district, has alleged that she was kidnapped by a villager and sold to a father of four children in Kashmir who allegedly committed repeated rape with her.The girl (name withheld) along with her father Hassan Mohammad today came to Rajouri to meet the district SP for action and direction to concerned SHO in this matter, but couldn’t meet as SP was out of station.While talking to reporters at Rajouri Hassan Mohammad alleged that her daughter went missing on April 23 and after two days search they approached police at Kotranka but no action was taken by the police.The girl was recovered from the custody of unidentified person from Kashmir by the father two days ago on information from a co-villager who happen to visit Kashmir for labor work and saw the girl there.“As we have no faith in Kotranka police we came to seek justice from the district SP,” said Hassan Mohammad. When contacted, Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Kotranka Haji Bashir said that the father of the girl never brought the matter of her missing daughter in the notice of police at Kotranka.“Had he informed the police action would have taken by us to trace the girl,” said SHO, adding that even when the girl was recovered by the father from Kashmir, he did not inform police.According to girl she was on way to pastures on Pir Panjal mountains on April 23 along with his father and other villagers. She developed some pain in the stomach and Tariq Hussain of same village offered her some medicines.“Immediately after the taking the medicine I lost my conscious and later found myself somewhere in Kashmir valley in the house of an unidentified person a father of four children. I was sold to the person by Tariq Hussain, can’t be denied,” said the girl.She added that she was repeatedly raped by the person till September 12 when her father reached there and she escaped from the captivity of the said person.Hassan Mohammad, father of the girl said that a person from their village went to Kashmir for labor job and he saw her daughter in a village in Kashmir.“When I reached there nobody was in the house and my daughter was sitting in a room. We escaped from there and after reaching at our house today we came to meet the district SP to narrate the incident and action in this matter, Hassan Mohammad added.News Updated at : Sunday, September 15, 2013
