'Flesh trade' ruffles Bhubaneswar's SBI colony residents
Upon receiving complaint that prostitution was going on in a flat, Saheed Nagar police swooped down in the apartment and rounded up two men, both employees of a central law enforcement agency, sources said. The two girls, whom the accused persons came to meet on Wednesday night, were tenants of the flat.
Police later released the youths after the girls vouched for them, claiming the two were their friends.
DCP (Bhubaneswar) Nitinjit Singh denied the existence of any flesh trade racket at SBI colony. "The two persons were familiar to the girls. The girls had invited them to celebrate the birthday of one of the two men on Wednesday evening."
"While leaving the flat, the two men found their bike-tyres punctured. When they came to retrieve the bike on Thursday morning, an argument took place with the security guards of the flat," Singh said, adding the security guards informed them. "Our men reached the place and picked up the men for verification. The allegation subsequently proved to be baseless," the DCP said.
But the residents were not ready to buy the police story. "We had been suspecting the movements of the girls for long. They were not decent in their dress code. We noticed young men visiting the flat during night," a neighbour said. However, the residents never lodged any complaint regarding this.
Meanwhile, the unprecedented drama prompted the women's association of SBI colony to convene a meeting in the wake of proliferation of sex trade in the city.
"The incident tarnished the image of the colony. We would ask the flat's owner to oust the girls from the colony. We would also impose restriction on bachelors," a woman resident said. TOI
