Test shows one of 3 trafficked girls is minor
PANAJI: The ossification test on the three trafficked victims who were rescued by the Panaji police recently has revealed that one is a minor.
The girls underwent ossification tests on November 10 after the Panaji sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) passed an order asking Goa medical college (GMC) doctors to conduct the same to determine the victims' ages.
The girls had initially refused to undergo the age verification test thereby raising suspicions that they could be minors. After the report revealed that one of the girls is a minor, the police booked the traffickers under the Goa Children's Act (GCA). The punishment for traffickers under GCA is more stringent than that under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, sources said.
Incidentally, a woman, who claimed to be the minor girl's mother, had approached the police claiming that her daughter was a major. She even produced documents revealing that the girl was a major.
With the test confirming that one of the girls is a minor, the police are now waiting for the SDM to pass an order asking for the re-examination of the girls, to determine if they were sexually abused.
"The girls had refused medical examination, after which we sent a request to the SDM asking him to pass an order for the ossification test as well as examination for sexual abuse. But only an order for the ossification test was passed. We hope the sub-divisional magistrate passes an order for medical examination to determine if there was any sexual abuse too," said police sources.
So far three persons have been arrested by the police in this case. Accused Amjad Khan and Manoj Kumar had come in a car with the three trafficked victims near the Junta House in Panaji.
When they reached the building, a police team intercepted them and arrested the two traffickers.
While Khan is from Bhopal, Kumar is from Delhi. Both reside at Benaulim. They have been booked under Immoral Traffic Prevention Act and now the Goa Children's Act.
Police sources said the duo were in Goa for quite some time, and that their job was to supply girls to tourists in the state.
"They have been here in Goa for some time. They are not involved in any other work. They have been assigned by one Javed to supply girls to customers," said police sources.
Later, Sawan Patil, who had trafficked one of the victim girls to Goa and supplied her to a customer in a starred hotel, was also arrested, sources said.
