Did cops turn away woman without registering kidnapping complaint?
NAGPUR: A 20-year-old woman has alleged that she was turned away from Ajni police station recently, without the cops paying heed to her serious complaint. The woman had claimed that she was kidnapped and sold to a man in Ahmedabad by an acquaintance. The cops however believe it is a family dispute.
The police counter her claims by saying that she had went to Ahmedabad on her own and married a man there. She was apparently not happy with the youth she had married earlier, said a senior cop. Ajni police station's senior inspector RV Sonone said that the woman's husband too was not ready to maintain any relations with her. "This seemed to us as a family dispute and nothing related to kidnapping or such things. She is levelling baseless allegations at us," said Sonone.
Sangeeta (name changed) claimed that she was drugged before forcibly being taken to Patan near Ahmedabad last month. She was asked to stay back as wife to a stranger, but managed to contact her family, who brought her back to the city. Sangeeta's family claimed that the girl was 'sold off' for Rs 1.25 lakh to a family in Ahmedabad.
The recently married Sangeeta had gone missing on October 27 in mysterious circumstances. A missing complaint was also filed at Ajni police station on October 31. The family members finally rescued her from Ahmedabad on November 23.
"We had somehow managed to establish contact with our girl and immediately approached the police. Ajni police station in charge (Sonone) said that chain-snatching was more important to them and not kidnapping. The cops did not even provide a constable with us when we were heading to Gujarat to bring the girl back at our risk," said family member Ramesh Telang.
Sangeeta said that Mansi (name changed), a family friend, wanted to purchase saris from Rameshwari. So, Mansi took Sangeeta to the house of another friend Sarita. Sangeeta has alleged that she was offered water at Sarita's place, and after drinking it she started feeling giddy and was rendered unconscious.
"I was taken to Unthkhana by Sarita and her son. I was given more drugs and I slipped into further haziness. Later, we headed to the railway station. All I can remember is that we boarded the compartment for the handicapped. The next day, I realised in the morning that we were at Ahmedabad station," says Sangeeta.
"There was another woman in the train, sitting in a different compartment. She came to meet Sarita and they had some secret talks. A couple came to pick us up at Ahmedabad railway station. I was taken to a family residing in Patan, where they urged me to marry their son. I tried to argue that I was already married. But, they did not torture or harass me," said Sangeeta.
Telang said, "We went to the police station to lodge a complaint but the cops were unwillingly to help us. The names of the women were also revealed to them. They did not act even after that."
In the recent past, TOI has highlighted several incidents of young girls being trafficked to different parts of the country, including Mumbai, Rajasthan, Agra, Gujarat, and either being sold as brides or being pushed into the flesh trade. Some of the girls have been rescued while many are still untraceable.
