Voice against BT : TRADING OF BRIDES IN HARYANA
Daulat Ram Chaudhry
- Rohtak
A woman from some other state is gangraped in a village of Rewari district and then sold to some man in Rajsthan for Rs. 40000. This is not an isolated case.
Haryana is a regular mandi for purchase and sale of girls from other states. There is bride deficit in Haryana due to highly adverse sex ratio. Child sex ratio is an important indicator of gender relations. As per 2011 census, child sex ratio in Haryana is 830 i.e. 830 baby girls for 1000 thousand boys. This record is worst not only in India but in whoe of the world. What a shame for Haryana which is presented as No. One Haryana.
This leads to shortage of brides for the adult male population. To meet this shortage girls are bought from distant places like Nepal, Assam, Jharkhand, Madhypradesh etc. by touts who sell them in Haryana to bachelors who have failed to find brides. No body asks for their religion, caste etc. Their life style, dialect, dress etc. are entirely different. They are just instruments to satisfy male lust. There are cases when such a bride is sold at a discount after the male lust is somewhat satisfied. Society is getting dehumanized.
The cause of such an adverse sex ratio is foeticide-killing girls in the womb of their mothers. Our khap panchayats should fight against this instead of interfering into marital relationships.NGOs and other civil society groups too should join this campaign.
