Nine girls from UP, Odisha rescued
Visakhapatnam: The Childline Service (1098) and labour department officials on Saturday rescued nine children, begging at several tourist spots and city temples. They had spotted the children, aged between eight and 12 years, at Simhachalam Devastha-nam and RK Beach during raids conducted by special teams.
Co-ordinator of Childline Service P. Rajasekhar said that they had counselled the rescued eight girls, urging them to give up the practice. Their parents, usually migrants from UP and Odisha, urged them to beg. “The local girls, found as slumdwellers, have been warned and told to give up the practice,” he added.
Officials and childline service staff called the parents of four girls they had rescued and promised the-m education and accommodation in welfare hostels.
Childline Services, a collaborative initiative by Childline India Foundation and Union ministry of women and child development, is running a 24x7 emergency phone outreach service for children while the labour department has appointed five teams to rescue children in city and give them proper rehabilitation facilities.
