It was a double whammy for 20-year-old Rehana, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district. She was first betrayed by her lover, who allegedly sold her to a pimp in Haryana.
And after she was finally rescued, the panchayat in her village ordered her social boycott and even banned her entry to the village.
Rehana had been into an affair with a youth from her community for the last few years. Last week, she eloped with him after he expressed his desire to get married. They decided to leave the village and settle somewhere else. The two lovers thought people in the village would object to their relationship.
An unsuspecting Rehana readily agreed. The youth took her to Haryana and allegedly sold her for Rs 80,000 to a pimp. Then he returned to the village.
In the meantime, the girl’s family members had been searching for her, and they caught the youth in the village. During interrogation, he told police that he had sold off the girl in Haryana, following which the family members traced her and brought her back to the village.
A panchayat was convened by village elders on Tuesday to discuss the fate of the girl and the youth. According to sources, the panchyat members allegedly first decided to kill them but backed off after being warned of the consequences. Then the panchayat ordered social boycott of the girl and the accused as well.
“They must neither return to the village nor try to meet their parents. Their parents themselves have told them to go away,” said a villager.
Police have detained the family members of the youth and are investigating the matter.(The girl’s name has been changed)
