Unmarried girl from Gwalior goes missing from Punjab Police custody in Bareta town
BARETA(Mansa): An unmarried girl found roaming at Railway station here and handed over to Punjab police by the local social organisations has reportedly gone missing from the police custody after five days of incident.
The incident has raised doubts about the role of Punjab Police and it is suspected that police has pushed the girl into flesh trade or sold to someone. The local social organisations have now approached the Punjab Human Rights Commission and Women Commission.
It is learnt that girl had trvelled in Punjab mail train and reached Bareta on March 11, 2011. She was identified as Raj Kumari daughter of Ramesh Sharma resident of Gwalior in Madhya Pardesh. She had reportedly separated from her family. The local social workers who tried to trace here family next day handed over the custody of girl to GRP and later she was handed over to Bareta police.The police kept her in the illegal custody for five days and her whereabouts are not known now.
Harmesh Singla a local social worker had asked the police to send the girl to Nari Neketan and present here before the magistrate but police failed to respond. The police didnt allow the girl to accompany the person with whome she wanted to go and girl refused to go with a person with whome police wanted to send her.
Harmesh Singla said that on March 16 he filed a complaint against police in the court of judicial magistrate and sought directions to present the girl in court. The police got information of court proceedings and she was taken out of police station and denied that she was in their custody. Singla also complaioned to SDM Budhlada who directed Tehsildar Bareta to conduct a raid in police station. But girl was taken away from police station before the raid.
Singla said that the whole town knows this thing that girl was handed over to Pufnjab police by GRP and she remained in the illegal police custody. He said that police had denied that any girl was in its custody. Singla has demanded high level probe into the incident and trace the girl. He said that complaints have been sent to Punjab government, Human Rights Commission and Women Commission. Source
