Human Trafficking and Technology. A framework for understanding the role of technology in the commercial sexual exploitation of children in the U.S.
A recent framework developed by Microsoft Research Connections described the Internet as the number one platform for buying and selling women and children for sex in the United States: “Victims trafficked through pimp-controlled sex trafficking, escort services, in-call and out-call services, chat rooms, pornography, and brothels disguised as massage parlors are commonly marketed on websites”.
There is little empirical research into the role that technology plays in human trafficking. As a result, we need to develop innovative ways of using technology to address the horrors of human trafficking.
